In the last two years, App in the Air’s Carbon Neutral Traveler initiative has come a long way. Since our last review, we’d like to share an update on some new projects we are working on.
We spoke to our users
At App in the Air, we value and appreciate our community’s views and ideas. To learn more about our users’ first-hand experience with our eco-features, we conducted two research projects. We turned to face-to-face conversations along with surveys to gather both qualitative and quantitative feedback. The most important thing that we learned is that the majority of our users are eco-conscious, not only when it comes to flying, but in their day-to-day lives as well. We were also glad to hear that App in the Air’s offsetting tools are deemed the most convenient and trustworthy among other options our users tried.
Communicating in the app
To help our users better navigate our sustainable initiatives, we launched enhanced in-app communications. From planting a tree for every booking, to understanding the carbon emissions related to a specific flight option, to offsetting your travel-related carbon footprint, now every feature is visible. Earth Week 2021
Due to increased interest in environmental issues and the previous year’s campaign success, we decided to build on our 2020 Earth Day campaign and do more by introducing the ability to offset your emissions in-app. As a result, more than 200 users became carbon-neutral fliers and offset over 1,200 tonnes of CO2 that week! We also invited our sustainability partners to have live conversations about carbon offsets in the aviation industry with CBL Markets, and about travel and reforestation with One Tree Planted.
It’s all about the numbers
Since April 2021, our users have offset more than 5,400 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide by donating to clean energy projects with the support of CBL Markets. Our community offset their emissions while either purchasing a plane ticket in-app, or post-travel by tapping “Go carbon neutral” in their profile and offsetting previous flights. They also planted more than 17,569 trees all over the world through our reforestation partner, One Tree Planted. We thank each and every one of you for supporting App in the Air’s ecological efforts!
What’s next?
We are constantly looking for new ways to make travel more seamless and sustainable. We know we have a large community of eco-conscious travelers and it’s our mission to make their travel lives easier.
Recently, we joined the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, which allows us to see a list of sustainability-certified hotels. App in the Air will use cross-reference this database with bookable accommodations available in the app to introduce a “responsible hotels” filter.
We also know how much our community of users love a friendly competition, and are working to introduce an Environmental Leaderboard, through which you will be able to see how sustainable you are compared to your friends and worldwide users.
